Camp Sagawau

Camp Sagawau, is an environmental education center established to promote the study of nature in a relaxed setting. It is open only for scheduled programs. Camp Sagawau’s primary attraction is a canyon estimated to be 100,000 years old. The only exposed canyon of its kind in Cook County, it has been preserved so that it remains much as it has been since the retreat of the glacier. Formed of the region’s bedrock dolomite limestone, the canyon provides a distinctive environment for wildlife.

How to Prepare for Your Visit
Prepare to get wet since the canyon has running water that you have to walk through.

What to See: Plants

Visitors can expect to see unusual and uncommon plants, including bublet fern, purple cliff brake, hairy rock cress, and walking fern. The Tall Grass prairie has prairie asters, goldenrod, and gentians are all in bloom. To view more samples of flora, click here.

What to See: Animals
The preserve provides breeding habitat for
frogs, long-tailed weasels, and mink.
