Volo Bog
Volo Bog State
Natural Area is the Illinois' only remaining open-water quaking bog.
Volo Bog began forming in a kettle hole lake over 6,000 years ago from
the Wisconsin Glacier. The old kettle hole is at least 50+ feet deep
and supports a half-acre pond.
Bog
A bog is a floating
mat of vegetation in which the initial plant community of sphagnum mosses
and sedges died, but did not decompose, formed a floating substrate
of peat from which more plants grew. As the mat thickened, it supported
larger plants such as cranberry, leatherleaf, poison sumac, and deciduous
tamarack pines. Other flora include the highbush blueberry, the carnivorous
pitcher plant, and several orchids.
